Maskara Theater Guild advocates on Diabetes Education
Maskara Theater Guild, Inc. has collaborated with the CVD Project of Handicap International along with the different Local Diabetes Support Groups in Davao for the Community Theater Production dubbed as “Diabetes, Kaya nato ni!”. This community theater is produced as one of the more unique approaches in information, education, communication (IEC) that may help the Peer Support Volunteers in giving education and information in a creative way to draw the interest and participation in the community. The type theater used in this production is participatory. Participatory theatre is a form of theater in which the audience interacts with the performers. Community awareness is important for the prevention of diabetes, possible lifestyle change, self- risk assessment, awareness about Cardiovascular Disease program and its existing services of the City Health Office through its barangay health centers.
Peer support volunteers (PSV) turned amateur-actors involved in this production are members of the local diabetes support groups of Barangay Lapu-Lapu Health Club, Barangay Mintal Health Care Diabetes ,Inc., Barangay Pampanga Diabetes Association, Inc., Care for Diabetic Persons of Calinan Association, Inc., Diabetes Association of Davao City, Inc. and the Matina Aplaya Diabetes Association. These volunteers were trained by Maskara Theater Guild, Inc. on August 10-12, 2011 with the basic guide on community theater production which aimed at enriching them as well as to develop and utilize their talents for the community.
“Diabetes, Kaya nato ni!”, community theater production is an activity in time for the World Diabetes Day (WDD) celebration. WDD is celebrated every year on November 14. The World Diabetes Day campaign is led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and its member associations. It engages millions of people worldwide in diabetes advocacy and awareness. World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat that diabetes now poses. World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day in 2007 with the passage of United Nation Resolution 61/225. The campaign draws attention to issues of paramount importance to the diabetes world and keeps diabetes firmly in the public spotlight.
To further spread this theater advocacy on diabetes education, this production will be toured to selected barangays in Davao city this November and December 2012.
